Dear Westboro Baptist Church, My name is Lindsey and I am a sinner. While I don’t completely understand how you can consider yourselves Christians, from what I have read, you justify your actions with scripture. Since you are clearly so familiar with God’s word, I would like to share some verses with you. I have lied, I have taken my God’s name in vein, I have treated other’s poorly, and I am guilty of a host of other sins I don’t care to publicly announce. Yes, I am a sinner. But here’s the thing…. so are you. Romans 3:23 says “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” ALL. We are all sinners, guilty of a variety of different sins. James 2:10 talks about the ranking of sins, or rather, lack there of. “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, has become guilty of all.” So if we are both sinners, why do you get to judge me for my transgressions? Or as the Bible puts it, “but who are you to judge your neighbor?”. James 4:12. Better yet, “You therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgement on someone, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgement do the same thing.” That one was from Romans 2:1. in case you didn’t already know. Now that we have established that you’re equally a sinner and that your judgement is no better than the other sins you condemn, lets address your approach. Yes, the Bible talks about the many ways God has punished sinners, which is what you seem to base your focus on. However, you’re missing one crucial fact about our Lord and King. God is love. 1 John 4:7-8 says “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God because God is Love.” Again, God is love. What’s so great about God’s love? Romans 5:8 “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” And what happened while Christ was dying on the cross to save us from our own sin? Luke 23 talks about the thief on the cross asking for forgiveness. That’s the other great thing about God’s love - he forgives. So while you invade my town spreading messages of hate and judgement, I have these two simple prayers. First, I pray that the Christians of Jefferson City, and all other cities that you enter with a similar mission, are reminded of the love that God shares with us and greets you with that very love and compassion that God commands us to practice in John 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” My second prayer is for the people of the Westboro Baptist Church. May you feel the love shared by the Christians you encounter and may you study the scripture a little closer. Sincerely, Me, and hopefully other Christians
