Dear Weymouth Public Schools Family, As the 2012-2013 school year - TopicsExpress

Dear Weymouth Public Schools Family, As the 2012-2013 school year comes to a close, I want to thank you for all that you have done to make this a successful school year. Your sustained efforts and commitment to high standards and expectations are critical to the development of our nearly 7,000 Weymouth Public Schools students. I also want to share a few reflections with you as I come to the end of my first school year as your Superintendent. When I came to the WPS last August, I had already heard about the strength of the Weymouth schools community and the pride in the schools. But it was amazing to witness first-hand the many acts – both grand and small – that contribute to this pride. I was proud to see teachers collaborate with colleagues in school-based and district-wide teams, present and share innovative ideas on our professional development “choice” day, and conduct complex lessons that engaged and challenged students in our schools on a daily basis. I was proud to see students showcasing their many talents: as performers in the musical performances of the The Wiz, Guys and Dolls and Goldilocks & the Three Bears; as engineers competing in a national robotics competition at Boston University, as scholars sharing their projects at the Capstone Presentations; as athletes on the fields and courts of our schools; as apprentices conducting the first car inspections in the CTE automotive program; as fundraisers for victims of the Marathon bombing tragedy; and as students in classrooms persisting every day through challenging learning tasks. I was also proud to join the traditions of our community as well: the bus tour of Weymouth with our newest educators, WEF Trivia Night with our many community supporters, the Teacher Memorial Courtyard Service, and Weymouth High School’s Graduation for the Class of 2013. Finally, I am extremely proud of our work together on new initiatives this year that I hope one day will become traditions in Weymouth Public Schools: a Parent University learning conference for our parents and community members; the development of a Parent and Family Engagement Action Team; a Weymouth Compact with businesses and higher education partners focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics – or STEM; and a focus on teaching and learning through our work with Instructional Rounds, vertical articulation teams, among many other efforts. I hope you will take time this summer to relax and rejuvenate. I look forward to continuing to serve all of you in the coming school year and working with you to make Weymouth Public Schools a model of educational excellence for every student. Sincerely, Kenneth Salim, Ed.D. Superintendent
