Dear White People, Sometimes I wanna slap somebody! Bare - TopicsExpress

Dear White People, Sometimes I wanna slap somebody! Bare with me while I vent and tell my story. A story not uncommon for black men in America. In the early 90s I lived on the upper east side of manhattan in NYC. A very ritzy and wealthy area of the city. Predominately rich older whites and corporate yuppies making money and moving up the ladder. During that time I had to have a root canal and other dental work so I was referred to a well known doctor on Madison ave. the work I needed wasnt covered by my insurance so I had to pay for it. No big deal. I think I had to make about 5 visits in total and just gave him a check each time I went. Around the 3rd visit the dental assistant (white girl ) started to really talk to me. Her line of questioning and small talk lead up to the ultimate question she was really trying to ask me. Her direct question after I avoided or talked around what I knew she was implying finally came out. She finally said and I quote: Are you some famous athlete I should know? I looked at her and said why would you ask that? Knowing that I just exposed her racist thought patterns and wanted to see her squirm. She replied that the doctor is very expensive and I write $3,000 dollar checks every time I come and Im so big and strong, and live in the neighborhood that I do. she was just curious why I was so rich. BINGO! She was curious how a Black man could live like I do and not be an athlete. The truth of her thoughts came out. Damn I wanted to slap her! But didnt. I just told her that she was mistaken and what I did that still shocked her. So today I was reminded of that moment twice. Once when I was in a meeting this morning in the city with some clients talking to a white girl that they are doing business with and she was very annoying and damn near condescending in her thought patterns. I had to shut her down quick and make sure she understood who she was talking to and dealing with. Excuse me Becky, homie dont play that! Then I go up to Harlem to look at another condo that I was interested in purchasing. While talking to the real estate agent he looks at me as we are walking through the house and says, So do you produce music or something? Danger Will Robinson... Danger! I was in the I need to slap somebody mode again! 2014 and a black man cant have the money to buy a condo in Harlem without having the hottest music on the market? Lord save these people from the destiny of slapville that they seek. Mind you, I had just came from a meeting with a successful marketing and law firm in the sports, entertainment and business worlds. A firm owned by black men with white attorneys working for them. I live in a circle where black people own their businesses and are highly successful. Most of my friends own their businesses and are very successful all over the country and world. What the hell white people!? Cant we just be like you or dare I say better? Next time Im not sure if Jesus and all 12 disciples can stop me from slapping someone! Ok got that off my chest! Bartender.......
