Dear Woodruff, First and foremost I would like give my condolences to everyone affected by the recent loss of the young men gunned down. Secondly, I would like to say a prayer for the accused. At the age of 7, my aunt/mother Geraldine Simmons, started taking us to Woodruff for the summers. It was a small town to a city boy but the love was always in the air. I remember picking acorns and tomatos in Willie Mae Goggins backyard, all the boys playing in Mr. Benny yard or at the park. As I got older, I always looked forward to going there. I attended the high school for 11th grade and might I say that was one of the best times of my life. Bubba Glass, Travis Riser, Giovanni Jones-Mejia, Belton Corey Lane, Ian Killey Moore, Josh Gossett, Marcus Parks and a few others made me feel at home. As teens we had our quarrels but we understood consequences and things never got too drastic. Over the past few years, I have heard of numerous tragedies to affect the city and it makes my heart hurt. I grew up in a crime ridden place and I would hate to see your city turned into that type of place. Understand that Woodruff is one of the few gems left. Its a place where everyone grew up together in some form. Your parents and older generation could never imagine their cozy little town could turn to a place of imminent danger. Things will not change overnight but think back of your days as a child and remember how good life was then. We all suffer setbacks and downfalls but our generation is expected to preserve the land we love. In my heart is a piece of Woodruff and I would love for Woodruff to get a little peace. Love each other, console each other, look out for each other again. I want my kids to enjoy the experience I had as a child there and I hope yall want the same for yours. Just remember to think of the consequences of everything. I love you all and stay strong.
