Dear all, I used to be an ad-hoc teacher in this university till today. For those who are interested I am hereby posting an account of how I spent my day job hunting. 9:30am- I reach IP college, where I was employed till the last day of the last semester. Till last semester there were three ad-hocs in the UR category. However, this semester they advertised one post (against a leave vacancy), that too just a month, sans summer salary. i need a job, so i turn up for the interview anyway, though the odds are not very favorable. The interview goes well but there are better candidates. I know I am not making it. 11 am: I reach Janaki Devi College for interview. A person with the registration sheet stands outside the interview room. He is refusing to let me sign, “You are late! , how can you turn up late for a job interview late!”. I try to convince him that I cannot reach everywhere in time, because so many colleges are holding interviews simultaneous. He is refuses to buy my argument, his reply being “University to aapke baare mein sochna chahiye lekin main kuch nahi kar sakta. I keep insisting that because the interview is still on, I should be allowed to enter my name in the register. Finally he says “andar maam ne kaha hai ki aur logon ko ab naam mat dalne do, agar aise hi log aate rahe to hamein din bhir baithe rahna padega interview ke liye.” Astonished and frustrated I leave. 2:30pm I reach Daulat Ram College. The interviews are not happening; some DUTA activists have arrived and they are trying to convince the principal against holding interviews. I get into an argument with some DUTA activists; “See, I have lost my job at IP, if you cannot stop interviews in all colleges you only end up putting people like us at a disadvantage.” They try to convince me that they are doing as best as they can. “We must strengthen the collective. Yes, you have been wronged, but that does mean all the rest of us should be wronged too!.” They have a point, we are not mad dogs that we should fall upon each other and tear each other apart. We must strengthen the collective. What am I supposed to do now! 3pm: The interview at Mata Sundari Devi College would have begun at 2 pm! Should I try my luck there? But they did not allow me to take the interview at Janaki Devi because I turned up half an hour late. Tired I call it a day. May be I should take a study leave for one semester.
