Dear collaborators, On the 13 May 2013 at 1:00a.m., an international expert from Italy in the field of haemoglobin disorders, Dr. Renzo Galanello, lost the battle with cancer, diagnosed only seven months earlier. The Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) and the whole thalassaemia family grieve for this loss and express their deepest and most sincere condolences to his family and colleagues at Cagliari , south Sardinia , Italy . In commemoration of this great scientist, TIF launches a new fellowship program, the TIF – Renzo Galanello Fellowship, which becomes part of TIF’s Educational Programme and is offered to physicians, specialists in the field of haematology, paediatrics or internal medicine. TIF is aware that in many countries there is a lack of trained medical and nursing staff and as result, healthcare of haemoglobinopathy patients is less than optimum. This need is partially due to a general lack of interest in haematology circles for non-malignant haematological disorders but also because these disorders are regarded as rare. Policies for rare and chronic disorders are absent or inadequate in many countries and health policy interest is diverted to other health ‘priorities’. Improving knowledge towards holistic care in thalassaemia and sickle cell disease has been a TIF priority since its establishment and this need has no geographical boundaries. What does the Fellowship grant and what is its duration? The fellowship is a 4- mo nth support for two physicians per year, to benefit from an attachment to a selected centre of expertise. The training periods will be January to April and September to December. The Fellowship is initially scheduled to hold for the years 2014-2016 with the potential to be extended afterwards subject to educational outcomes The funding includes: · A stipend of $2000 USD/month for each successful candidate, which intends to cover the successful candidate’s accommodation, transportation and other living expenses. Any expenses above this amount will be the responsibility of the successful candidate. · A symbolic fee of up to $500 USD for each candidate to the training centre for its administrative needs. In addition to the above, the Fellowship will cover each successful candidate’s airfare (economy class) to and from his country. Selected Training Centres: For 2014, two centres of expertise have been selected in Europe which comply fully to the European Criteria for Reference Centres for Haemoglobin Disorders and which have established a specialized training program for this fellowship. TIF endeavours to expand its selection of centres of expertise as training centres for the TIF-Renzo Galanello Fellowship in the future by identifying and promoting such centres in other regions of the world, so as to facilitate the travelling of selected candidates, who might live or work in other regions of the globe. Conditions · The candidates and their employers must be committed to work in the field of haemoglobinopathies at their current institution of employment for a period of at least 3 years after the fellowship, so that the candidate also trains other medical specialists in the field during this period. A letter of consent for this must be sent along with each candidate’s application, both by the candidate himself/herself and by his/her employer, who can be the director of the institution where the candidate is employed or an assigned official of the Ministry of Health of the candidate’s country of employment, if the institution where the candidate is employed belongs to the Ministry of Health of the candidate’s country of employment. · Priority will be given to candidates who have a specialist training in Haematology or Paediatrics or Internal Medicine and at least 2 years experience in working with patients with Thalassaemia or Sickle Cell Disease. · In cases where the selection committee feels that specialized training in one or more specific aspects of the treatment or monitoring of haemoglobin disorders is essential in a specific country, training could be offered for a smaller duration (1-2 months) on the particular specialized topic. Such could be training on endocrine or hepatic or cardiac monitoring of haemoglobinopathy patients. · The candidates must provide information on the number and type of patients attending the clinic in which they are working and the services offered. · The applicants should speak fluent English and be able to provide proof of their proficiency in this language · No more than one application per host institution will be considered at one time. · Final approval will be obtained through common consultation and consensus between the training centre and the Thalassaemia International Federation. Hence, the application of each candidate will be reviewed by the selection committee that will be comprised of: o 2 members of TIF’s Scientific Advisory Board on behalf of TIF o 2 chief medical specialists from the training centre of excellence, on behalf of the training centre How to apply The Application Form is now available on TIF’s website (thalassaemia.org.cy).
