Dear fellow humans, Mandela Day is an occasion to prove our egoism-led world wrong. Like me, you probably feel disheartened and disillusioned with the society we live in, and you wonder if doing some good for a day will make any difference. But hopefully, like me, you also believe that every little helps. And here is why I need you. Mandela Day is an occasion to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better. But Mandela Day will be a human success only if we fight desensitisation. We can achieve that by trying to urge into action those friends who are sceptical about one-off worldwide events as potential triggers for a better and more self-aware society. Here is a story to tell them. Arriving at the recent NObama protest in Pretoria, Daily Maverick reporter Jessica Eaton couldn’t help but notice the only white family among the Cosatu cadres. Nigel Branken, his very pregnant wife Trish, and their five children were all dressed in hand painted signs in protest to President Barack Obama’s visit and in solidarity with their working class brothers and sisters. The journalist then found out that the family had recently given up their six-bedroom Midrand home, their garden, their DSTV, their medical aid and their safety, and made the audacious decision to move to Hillbrow, in downtown Johannesburg.
