Dear friend, Prime Minister Modi is keen to provide Aadhaar number to all. Certainly, every citizen must have an identification (ID) number to avail of various services but don’t you think that it is high time to have only one multipurpose ID number? In several countries, developed as well as developing, every citizen has only one identification number which is used for several purposes: government welfare programmes, opening bank account, availing of financial services, issue of passport, filing income tax return, as voter identity card, etc. Since information about all important activities are sent to the Central databank, gradually all the requisites information about a citizen can be obtained at the click of button Unfortunately in India, we still have outdated system: multiplicity of ID numbers and multiplicity of Central and State government departments collecting biometric data. In addition, one has to furnish KYC form for availing of each financial service. Use of a single ID Number for all welfare schemes, financial services, issue of passport, registration of property, issue of driving licence, etc. would result in enormous saving of time, manpower, paper work, etc. Life would become much easier and corruption would be reduced drastically. We need a national campaign to persuade Prime Minister Modi to replace different ID numbers by one multipurpose ID number. I have prepared a write-up on the subject.
