Dear friends- When I was a kid, during summer vacation I liked to - TopicsExpress

Dear friends- When I was a kid, during summer vacation I liked to spend a little more time in bed in the morning than was possible during the school year. We moved back to the old farm in North Danville each summer, from our ‘winter home’ in a town some miles away where my father was a pastor. I’d lie in bed each morning, listening to the baseball scores, loving the feeling of my pillow. My father had different ideas. He would stand at the bottom of the stairs, flicking the light switch on and off – on and off, on and off – while he sang from that old hymn, “Work for the night is coming.” This practice of his did not enhance my love of work. I’ve spent my life trying to figure out the proper relationship between labor and rest. I think a lot of us work through this struggle – some more than others. Today, we tell the story of Mary and Martha; you may remember the story. Look it up, in Luke 10: 38-42. It’s a story about… what? It’s a story that has given a lot of good, hard-working people a lot of heartburn. There is much to say about the story – some of it reassuring, and some of it challenging – at least to some of us. All I know is this: work is a good thing. So is rest. So is Sabbath. Come live into the Sabbath with us this morning. Some things are true, even though their opposite is also true. We worship at 10 AM, and we’ll have time for fellowship, coffee, and refreshment following worship. Then, if you must, you can get back to work. Sure, the lawn needs mowing. I get that… Sabbath blessings- AFP
