Dear friends...my heart is full from all the wonderful good wishes Ive received over the past two days. I never realized how many folks there were out there that cared about this old gray haired dude. I pray good things for all of you and the simple pleasures of a contented life. The circle is now complete. God Bless you all. For those of you who were not there Sunday I wanted to print my acceptance speech. These folks need to be honored in print because they are reasons for my determination to be the best I could be. AES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENTS AWARD My thanks and gratitude to the Nashville Chapter of the Audio Engineering Society for this wonderful award. I am so honored to be inducted into this class of 2014, along with Charlie Bragg...Mac Evans...Al Pachuki...Neil Wilburn and Jimmy Lockert. I got here due to the help and talents of many folks... that I intend to honor today... First and foremost...Glenn Snoddy and Lee Hazen and Jim Pugh of Woodland Sound Studios, who were all honored here in 2012. To Glenn, who had the guts to hire me, a kid who walked in off the street with a demo in hand. Without you I may not have been here. And to Lee Hazen who took me under his wing and taught me so much! His best advice....stay after hours...pull multitrack tapes out of the vault...put them on a machine...run the through the console and learn what EQ and sound effects can do. And to Jim Pugh, the electronic genius who kept Woodland Sound running like a clock. An absolute gentleman and a first class helpmate. My thanks to Bob Montgomery, Bobby Goldsboro, Kelso Herston and the late Buddy Killen for hiring me to work for them at their new studio....The Sound Shop. My thanks to Billy Sherrill and the late Harold Lee for easing my transition into a new studio. Billy will be up here one day accepting one of these awards!!! Later owners, Jon Shulenberger, the late Craig Deitschmann and John Meyers joined Buddy Killen as owners later and I spent many exciting years working with them all. To Those ladies who organized and tried to hold things together from the front desk my hats off to... Cindy Gallagher...Beverly Herro...Rose Johnson... Montez Bivins (Dorriety)... BJ Rogers and so many others. We hosted many interns from MTSU and Belmont and the majority of them couldnt wait til it was time to go home. It infuriated me to see folks that werent willing to take this opportunity to learn Then there were the very few INTERNS that were really serious about learning their craft and Im so proud of them... Tom Hitchcock...Robert Tassi...Fran Overall _______________________________________ Then there were the excellent engineers I had the opportunity to work with at Sound Shop... Billy Sherrill...Harold Lee...Richard Adler...Travis Turk...Pat McMakin...Mark Capps...and my old buddy, Mike Bradley who started in the tape room, making copies. Jerry Crutchfield...Nik Venet...Brad Shapiro...Paul McCartney...and the late, great Buddy Killen. _______________________________________ I was also so blessed to have the opportunity to work with such fine artists as... Gove Scrivenor...Joanna Jacobs...Doug Kershaw...MillieJackson...TheCrickets...JanieFricke ...TanyaTucker ..Razzy Bailey...T.G. Sheppard Johnny Rivers...Lee Greenwood...and Paul and his late wife, Linda McCartney. _______________________________________ Then there were the awesome backup singers who are nearly too numerous to name... the groups like The Holiday Sisters....Rhodes, Chalmers and Rhodes... Lisa Silvers... Herschel Wigginton and so many other great singers whose names now elude me. ______________________________________ There were so many incredibly talented musicians, many of whom have now passed on including... Chet Atkins...Floyd Krammer...Buddy Harmon ...Bobby Thompson...Doc & Merle Watson... Timmy Tappan...and the late, great, incredible drummers, Kenny Buttrey and Larrie Londin. Then there are the ones still living and playing...I did so much of my work with The Memphis Boys...Reggie Young... Bobby Wood and Bobby Emmons...Hayward Bishop...Gene Chrisman...Tommy Cogbill... Mike Leach. Several great piano players such as Pig Robbins...David Briggs... and the man who invented the memorable licks that everyone else used on Wind Beneath My Wings, Ron Oates! There are so many other fantastic musicians that made my work so easy that I cannot begin to remember them all... but they all know who they are. My sincere thanks to all these wonderful music people I named who were so instrumental in getting me to this platform to accept this award. Ill be forever grateful to them and my guardian angel for enabling me to have such an amazing, magical lifetime full of music. Thank everyone for this honor. I also want to thank the following people who came as my special guests today...they were all a very important part of my life: Andy & Liz Peck (3M Audiotape) Mike & Susie Bradley Jessica & Kevin Beamish Fran Overall Brenda East-Blackford Joanna Jacobs My beautiful Granddaughter, Brooke My son Philip and his new wife Christy Philips sister, my granddaughter, Becky Attaway And I especially want to thank my wonderful ex-wives for honoring me with their presence today...Connie Boone and Monty Bivins (Dorriety) In pursuing my dreams to be the best I could be , they put up with many a lonely night and I sincerely apologize for that.
