Dear friends, the time has come for me to ask for your help! So many of you have been so supportive of my career change over the last few years, I hope I can count on your support again. As you know, I graduated from Jefferson with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in May and passed the licensing exam in July. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done and I’m so happy I’m now an RN! Now on to the reason for this post -- many people are under the misconception that a nursing gig is easy to find and that once you are educated and licensed, you have an automatic in to a job. This has proven to be the farthest thing from the truth. At a time when the healthcare system should be ramping up its workforce as the country prepares for millions of uninsured Americans to have guaranteed access to healthcare over the next few years, new nursing graduates cannot find work in metropolitan areas where concentrations of nursing schools are high. To put this into a clearer picture – its basically impossible. After two years of study, some of the hardest of my life, I now sit and sift through job listings that state in no specific terms – no new graduates allowed. After a month of job searching and 60 applications, I have only found one hospital actually advertising for a new graduate program. My student friends have quickly realized that the ONLY way in somewhere, is to HAVE an IN somewhere that can pull a favor, or a string and get a nurse manager to accept a new RN for an open position. I am extremely flexible -- I will commute up to an hour, work all shifts all days and have no time restrictions. I would actually be willing to relocate if it meant the right opportunity. While my education primarily trained me to be a floor nurse, I am willing and open to working anywhere – hospital, nursing home, home care, psych, community clinic, doctor’s office, prison/correctional, surgical center, cruise ship, international outreach, Hawaiian island, starship or moon colony. :) I just need a start, an in, someone who knows someone that knows someone that hires nurses. I just need a helping hand to begin my career of helping people. Can you help me?
