Dear friends, this is a translation of a short report on the current situation with Ukrainian in the Crimea. Which language needs protection? Serhii Wakulenko Teaching Suspended at the Department of Ukrainian Studies of the Tauric National University in Simferopol The report comes from the Centre for Investigative Journalism, which cites the students’ account of the events. According to the students’ accounts, the teaching has been suspended for the time being until the 19th of March, but possibly also beyond that date, because of “an exacerbation of the situation in Simferopol for the Ukrainian speakers”. “On behalf of the Faculty’s aqdministration we have been advised not to speak Ukrainian and to keep away from the jourlalists, in order not to provoke any conflicts and to avoid harrassment on the part of the pro-Russian activists. We have also been informed that one of the teaching staff members of the Faculty had been battered”, say the students. “There is another regrettable point: it have been intimated to us that the current academic year at the Faculty of Ukrainian Studies of the Tauric National University may be the last one for ourselves, because the Faculty either will cease to exist as such, or Ukrainain will be taught in it as a foreign language”, told the students approached by the Centre. At the same time, the students have been promised that the current undergraduates will get in due time their Bachelors’ and Masters’ diplomas officially recognized in Ukraine.
