Dear international students, BIOLOGY SEMINARS Date: Wednesday 11 September 2013 Time: 2:30 pm Venue: FSM 2.18 1. Mathias Sharmann, ETH-Zurich, Plant Ecological Genetics Institute of Integrative Biology, Zurich, Switzerland Title. Ecological genomics of carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plants Abstract. With recent technological progress in nucleic acid sequencing and novel bionformatic tools, it is now feasible to realise detailed genomic studies also in non-model species. Nepenthes are a particularly interesting case for the study of plant evolution because of their pronounced ability to produce fertile hybrids, their independently evolved dioecy, and their extraordinary biology. We intend to employ these novel technologies in combination with more traditional fieldwork and nursery experiments to explore the Nepenthes genome from an evolutionary and ecological perspective. In this project, we want to sample the natural diversity found in Nepenthes populations in the wild and use ecological fieldwork in combination with molecular genetic and bioinformatic methods to explain how evolutionary processes affect these plants. 2. Dr. Ulmar Grafe, UBD Title. Calling in the face of eavesdroppers: Selective pressures on anuran advertisement calling in the presence of frog-biting midges Abstract. The advertisement calls of anurans are subject to eavesdropping by illegitimate receivers such as competitors, predators, and biting flies. In this talk we report on the selective pressures that act on anuran advertisement calls and calling behaviour from frog-biting midges (Diptera: Corethrellidae) from northern Borneo.
