Dear pastor friends--Read this. (Dear church-going friends with pastors who dont know it, share it with them). Put it on top of your Mothers Day file. It took me a few years to learn that all of these people are either present, or absent, on Mothers Day, directly because of ways they feel when the select roses are passed out or other things are done to single out and set apart. I was fortunate to learn it earlier than some, partly because of being raised in a stepfamily by my 3rd mother, and longing to be in that kids family with the lady every kid in the neighborhood called Mom. But Ive seen many churches and organizations promote pro-family days by exactly this kind of disregard for the full range of experiences that they leave out...and then wonder why the church keeps shrinking by exclusion instead of growing by inclusion. Your family can celebrate this day at home any way it chooses. But your church needs to know that Mothers Day, and Fathers Day, are very complicated, and deserve the respect of fuller vision. P.S. Mothers Day comes in May, so you wont find this by checking old Facebook posts then--save it now.
