Dear sweet Dobbin saw some boys in the street playing with a soccer ball. He was very interested so I decided to use this as a socialization lesson. He was eager to go out front until he saw the boys teenage brother. That made him nervous. So I walked him slowly to the end of the drive way and sat down. He was intrigued by the boys, but not the teen. Then someone started playing loud music up the street. Then a father and little little boy started playing chase down the street. Dobbin watched everything. He did not show anyone else he was nervous, but he was pressed hard up against me. I mean hard. I have had dogs lean against me when unsure before but never like this. I could feel little jumps when the teen came too close, but he didnt panic. I just wrapped my arms around him and talked him through it. He looked at me often and even kissed my cheek a few times. I now know he trusts me to keep him safe and I will be using that to build up his confidence. I was glad to see how well he handled this. It is a long way from the shaking, trembling mess I first met in the vet office. After awhile we got up to go in the house. He was ready to bolt through the door. Instead I made him sit on the porch where he was still outside but removed from all of the activity. He gathered himself and then we went inside nicely. He ran straight to the kitten, Bits, and did this.
