The beautiful abandoned castle called Chateau de Noisy (formerly known as Chateau Miranda), seems to be counting its final days. The castle was built between 1866 and 1907 by members of family de Liedekerke Beaufort and served as their residence until the second world war. Between 1950 and 1980 the castle was used by the National Railway Company of Belgium as a holiday center for the children of its employees, with a capacity of 200 guests. Afterwards it continued to welcome young kids for a short stay in the countryside, providing fresh air, a great outdoor playground and healthy food. Over the years, many thousands of childeren have enjoyed a fabulous stay in this breathtaking castle, and many still refer to it as the setting of the most cheerful memories of their childhood. The castle was abandoned in 1991 and after more than 20 years of decay, a request for demolition was filed in December 2013. The main motivation of this demand seems to be the vulnerable state of the building and the accompanying risks for the numerous people/photographers visiting the premises to get a glimpse of this old beauty hidden in the woods. Although the current situation is far from ideal and safety risks are undoubtedly present, a demolition of Chateau de Noisy would be a very shameful final step. This place embodies Belgian and European history, and notwithstanding the fact that many parts of the building are in a terrible state, the architectural beauty of this castle is indisputable. The Swiss newspaper Tribune de Genève recently selected it as one of the most beautiful abandoned places in the world (link). A solution has to be found for the current unsafe and unorganised situation, but other options to preserve this beautiful building must be considered instead of letting bulldozers level it to the ground. In conclusion, we believe Chateau de Noisy should be saved from demolition and should become protected heritage!
