Dear water friends, We like to share with you the research - TopicsExpress

Dear water friends, We like to share with you the research papers from Professor Dr. Taro Arikawa, Principal Researcher, Port and Airport Research Institute (PARI), Japan who has done a lot of outstanding research into the Japan tsunamis. You can find his publications in the internet website such as: jaee.gr.jp/jp/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/tsunami.pdf and journals.tdl.org/icce/index.php/icce/article/viewFile/6845/pdf and srh.noaa.gov/images/srh/ctwp/Tohokutsunamiportssurvey.pdf and pbs.org/newshour/bb/science-july-dec11-japan_11-17/ and cee.hawaii.edu/abstracts/022410.pdf We contend that this type of research approach and the attitude of openness of Dr. Taro Arikawa in sharing his tremendous specific knowledge and groundtruth experience is an example to follow for all of us. The way he documents, compiles, analyses, interprets, designs and integrates all aspects of hydraulic engineering and innovative thinking into one prsentation is to be praised and lauded here. We may say that he is a ‘3-D thinker/design engineer’. Let us follow this good example to share our respective expertises with fellow water friends around the world. Dr. Taro Arikawa makes use of aerial images/photographs to study the tsunami impacts at 3-D scales. In our modern time, one may think of using non-military drones for this type of scientific research and post-disaster damage survey/assessment and management. He further proposes soft and hard elements for counter-measures, an approach that is very much recommended in modern environmentally-friendly coastal defence infrastructures (principle of building with nature). Most countries in Asia are currently busy looking for new innovative designs to protect their coasts against future tsunamis and this publication may provide the good example/approach for any further refined tailor-made localised design. We hope that this publication may serve as a source of inspiration for us all, and that one day we can invite Dr. Taro Arikawa to make a presentation for our informal water club gatherings. We wish you a pleasant reading! Warm regards, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien - HP: 0982 522 375 Secretary - INFORMAL SAIGON WATER DEBATING CLUB
