(OPERATION GOMORRAH). ההפצצה יצרה את סערת האש הגדולה ביותר שיצרו חילות האויר של בריטניה וארהב במלחמת העולם השנייה. סופת האש התחוללה משום שתקופה ארוכה למדי, שקדמה להתקפה, היתה תקופת יובש שמלווה בחום חזק. התנאים הללו יצרו , מסביב לאזור המופצץ אויר חם שעלה למעלה,והחל להסתחרר כטורנדו של אש שהגיע לגובה של 500 מטר, והמשיך לשטוף את העיר. בהפצצה הזאת נהרגו 42,000 בלתי מעורבים ונפצעו עוד 37,000, ולמעשה כל העיר נהרסה. רוב המתים פשוט נחנקו מחוסר חמצן . כ 1,200,000 איש נאלצו לעזוב את העיר לאחר השרפה. צהל הינו הצבא היחיד בעולם המזהיר אזרחים להתפנות מאזור העומד להיות מותקף, אפילו ב SMS אישיים, טלפונים וכרוזים וממתינים כמה שעות לפני התקפתו. הנה צילום של העיר , כמה חודשים לאחר מכן:
