Dearest Friends - I am sick and disgusted now to have to post this. Today I went to a Western Union station at my local supermarket to wire Herbert Mugerwa the donations collected over the past 2 weeks, an incredible sum of $3274, and they would not let the transfer go through. I received a call yesterday from Western Union informing me I was under investigation for the weekly (or every 2nd week) transfers of your donations. The reason given was that they wanted to protect *us* from fraud, and they wanted to be sure the donations were being sent to a legitimate charity. I told them all about Herbert Mugerwa and his Facebook page and the one for The UBUNTU Project, and I encouraged the man I spoke with to check them out. I thought for sure that hed not only be satisfied this is all legitimate, but that hed also want to make a donation. Who wouldnt? He assured me that while the investigation was being completed my account would not be suspended, and that the transfer I told him Id be making today would go through without a problem. That was not to be the case. When I tried today to wire Herbert the money the transaction wouldnt go through and I had to call a phone number that appeared on the screen. After explaining the situation to a woman who identified herself as Ides - operator 231 she informed me, after putting me on hold, that my transaction would be denied, and that the money is being refunded to me. I dont know what to do next. First there is the $3274 that needs to get sent to Herbert immediately because there are deposits to be paid for some equipment needed for the Christmas party, and Herbert is afraid that if we wait too long other people might rent it all first and it wont be available. Secondly, we need to come up with another and hopefully less expensive way to send the donations every week. Western Union has been nothing but a tremendous hassle to work with this entire past year. They have not been crediting me with all of the points Ive earned from all of the transfers, and these points help reduce the transfer fees. Their customer service reps whove promised to remedy this and phone me back never did. Their fees vary from state to state, and in some places they are downright obscene. But worse than anything else, they have proven themselves to be heartless and inhumane. Therefore I am proposing that all of you share this with your network of friends and add your own comments. I also urge everybody to find a few minutes to phone Western Union, both in support of Herbert and The UBUNTU Project, and also to voice your own disgust over their decision to not allow us to send our donations to Herbert through them. If you are even further motivated, maybe you can contact your local newspapers, tv reporters, bloggers, or anyone else who has a public forum and ask that they pick up on this. YOU really DO have the power to make a difference. Youve seen that for yourselves already with your generosity and what its already done for the people of Buyana. Now we need you to help in a different way. We need a new channel to send Herbert these donations through. If any of you are bankers and can assist, please let me know. But at the same time, we also need you to speak out, right now. Please call Western Union, and also please help publicize this in any way possible. We need to make people aware of how cold and heartless Western Unions decision is. And we cant allow them to ruin this years Christmas party in Buyana. We need your help now more than ever.
