Dearly beloved, God told Elijah to anoint Elisha, the son of Shaphat, as a prophet in his place (1 Kings 19:16). Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. Although called to be a prophet, Elisha followed his master Elijah and served him (1 Kings 19:21). He waited patiently for several years to receive God’s power. He served as the attendant of Elijah (2 Kings 3:11). It is here that we are called to focus on the humility of Elisha. Before he followed Elijah, he was a wealthy man. However, he left everything, humbled himself in the presence of his master and followed him faithfully. Most of us, the moment we receive the salvation experience, long to hear prophecies concerning our lives. If we happen to hear a servant of God say, “God will use you as a mighty instrument in His hand,” we become impatient in our enthusiasm to be used by God. On the contrary, from the life of Elisha, we learn how important it is for us to wait patiently for the fulfillment of God’s promises in our lives at the appointed time. Elisha waited for God’s time to receive His power double fold. When the time came for Elijah to be taken up by God, he said to Elisha, “Stay here please for the Lord has sent me on to Bethel.” Quite often, we are satisfied with a few blessings received from God. However Elisha said, “As the Lord lives and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” He was unwilling to be separated from his master. Therefore, they went to Bethel together. Elijah moved to Jericho as well as Gilgal but Elisha followed him faithfully, refusing to stay behind. After both of them had crossed over Jordan, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you.” Elisha expressed his wish: “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” (2 Kings 2:9). As desired, he received the spirit of Elijah twofold. Dearly beloved, when you read in the Bible about the miracles performed by Lord Jesus, His disciples and the apostles or when you witness how God uses His ministers mightily, don’t just stop with admiration. Cry out to the Lord, “O Lord, please take me forward to this higher spiritual level. Give me the spirit of excellence which You gave to Elisha.” Focus your eyes steadily on Him and wait patiently for His time. He will certainly bless you, granting you that two-fold power of the Spirit. May God honour you by granting you the abundant blessings that He granted to His servants. The Bible says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). Through His death on the Cross, He has secured wonderful blessings for us. We must humble ourselves before Him and wait for His blessings. Then He shall bless us doublefold at His appointed time. Prayer: Loving Lord Jesus, You have secured wonderful blessings for us through your death on the Cross. I trust in your promises. I humble myself before You and wait for your blessings. Fulfill your promises in my life. Bless me doublefold at your appointed time. In Your matchless name I pray. Amen. ----
