Death and Obit of Jo Bennett -- sister of former brother in law Johnny Bennett and aunt to the grandchildren of Wanda Totty Leonard and C.B. of Star City. Nettye Jo Bennett Johnson, 59, of Pine Bluff, formerly of Star City died Friday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. She was born November 9, 1953 in Star City to the late, Samuel L. And Mary E. McEntire Bennett. She was also preceded in death by Annie Clyde Moore, Mattie McGriff Moore and R.A. Goyens Jr,. who raised her. Also preceding her in death was a sister, Rhelda Jane Benett Morton. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Star City, a Sorority member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, an avid Facebook fan and was a customer service representative for Wagnor Industries in Pine Bluff. Survivors include two brothers, David L. Bennett (Hazel) of Pearl River, La. John R. Bennett (Carolyn Jo) of Star City, a sister, Sammy Kay Bennett Searcy (Jim) of Monticello, a caregiver, Virginia Maxine Curtis of Star City, her dog, Maggie, nephews, David W. Bennett and Troy Bennett of Pearl River, La. Terry Bennett of Houston, Texas. Danny Morton of Catoosa, Okla., Pete Searcy and Charlie Searcy of Monticello, Dusty Bennett of Star City, two Nieces, Desha Brown and Jenna Johnson of Star City and a host of extended family and friends. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday at Hickory Grove Cemetery near Star City with Debbie Towles and Charlie Searcy officiating. Pallbearers will b Grady Story, Donnie Weatherford, Michael McMillen, Paul Hutchins, Ronnie Ellis and Jeff Puckett, Honorary Pallbearers will be Mac D and Gene Grahnert. Visitation will be at Griffin Funeral Service in Star City from 5-7 p.m. Sunday. In Lieu of flowers the family ask that memorials will be made to the American Cancer Society. Bennett Birth: Aug. 27, 1911, USA Death: Jul. 4, 1955 Arkansas, USA Pine Bluff Commercial Tuesday, July 5, 1955 Page 1 4 Star Citians Die in Holiday Crashes Four persons died and three others were injured in two accidents yesterday on Highway 65 South. All of the dead and injured were from Star City. Dead are Ralph Whitehead, age unknown, Sam Bennett, 44, Will Cogbill, 48, and Raymond Scifres, 18. Injured are J. H. Henley and his brother O. C., 15 and Grover Butler, 40. Whitehead, Bennett and Cogbill were killed in a two-truck collision at Noble Lake at 3 p.m. The three injured persons were involved in the truck accident at Noble Lake. Deputy Sheriff Melvin Jordan said that the Noble Lake mishap was one of the worst accidents that he had investigated. Whitehead, Bennett and Cogbill died when the two pick-up trucks in which they were riding collided while one was attempting to pass the other. Both trucks spun off the highway and crashed into a large oak tree about 100 yards north of the Jones Drive-In at Noble Lake. Jordan said that a 1935 GMC pick-up, driven by Henley, struck the tree after leaving the highway. He said that the other pick-up, a 1933 Ford, driven by Cogbill, jumped the Henley truck, struck the tree climbed about 20 feet up the tree trunk and then fell on top of the other truck. Whitehead and Bennett were dead when Jordan and Pine Bluff City Detective Henry Brown arrived at the scene. Cogbill died shortly after arrival at Davis Hospital. Jordan said that the two trucks left the pavement while traveling down a straight portion of the highway. He reported that it was believed the trucks were traveling at a high rate of speed and possibly were racing when the accident occurred. Henley Critical J. H. Henley was described as being in a critical condition. Jordan reported that the injured man was suffering from a collapsed lung, broken bones and crushed ribs. O. C. Henley suffered a broken leg, severe cuts and possible internal injuries. Both were admitted to Davis Hospital. Butler was not admitted to the hospital, but was released after emergency treatment. He suffered only minor cuts bout the body and a large cut on the head. Bennett and Butler, were riding in the Cogbill truck at the time of the wreck. Whitehead was with O. C. Henley in the Henley truck. A 10:30 funeral will be held tomorrow for Bennett, an employee of the Arkansas Highway Department. In the First Baptist Church of Star City with burial in the Hickory Grove Cemetery by Robinsons Mortuary. A native of Star City, Mr. Bennett was the son of David L. and Mary Martin Bennett. He was educated in the schools of Star City. Survivors include his widow, the former Mary Ethel McEntire; two sons, David L. Bennett of Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, and John Robert Bennett of Star City; three daughters, Rhelda Jane Bennett, Sammye Kay Bennett and Nettie Jo Bennett, all of Star City; four brothers, Eugene and Pete Bennett of Star City, Earl Bennett of Monroe, and Vernon Bennett of Dallas; and one sister, Mrs. Idell Sackett of Dallas. Active pallbearers for Mr. Bennett will be Garland Vick, Woodrow Wilson, Floyd Fullbright, Lester Rahab, E. J. Rahab and Glenward Robertson.
