Death of Pre-matured babies insisted FDA to Warn on Probiotic usage FDA had warned about using dietary supplements containing probiotics in patients susceptible to infectious diseases. As of now, the FDA norms probiotics are not subjected to safety and efficacy study, nor has any standards for manufacturing and testing procedures.The warning was followed by the death of 11 pre-term babies from a disease mucormycosis, an invasive fungal disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified, the death of the infants occurred after the consumption of the so called proboiotic supplement, which was provided with the medicine as a regular practice. The Probiotc was given to the pre-term babies to treat necrotizing enterocolitis.
