Death of justice MALIKA SHRESTHA As he never learned to read and write He didn’t find a good way to live his life Hardly got a job as helper that was truly a rife So his dreams and hopes were always set aside Collecting bus fare and traveling through rough road Dealing with the passengers was his routine work This was what his life looked like Working hard all day long To bear all this he was just too young A day turned out bad to him Coincidentally, he was caught in a pilfering And a charge sheet was filed against him He was shocked knowing this, He knew he wasn’t part of the mob He couldn’t eat or fall asleep The beating and scolding made him weep The monster-like cops took him away “He stole, he robbed” were all what they had to say But what really happened, they didn’t care The way he was treated was so not fair Four brutal cops, angry and drunk Held him tight and put him in a trunk Locked him away in utter darkness Then no cries was heard, no tears wept In the dark night, only peace prevailed Chains and shocks caused his death Before he could take one last fresh breath Maybe he’d find peace after death But what is it to be done with the merciless? Justice is yet to be served Men in power, show some nerve Those cruel acts must be abolished Criminals and traitors must be punished Let dreams be turned into reality Let voices be raised against brutality Let justice be given to all those innocent So happily, their lives can be spent The poet is an A-Level student at St Xavier’s College in Maiti Ghar.
