Deaths from West Nile virus, total US, so far: 1,000 From Ebola: 1 Personally, and I am not an epidemiologist, although I did drive by a Holiday Inn Express recently, I dont Ebola can ever become a widespread epidemic in the US. Too much human contact is required, and unlike AIDS, the human contact is not the kind that humans participate in enthusiastically. The really dangerous diseases are the ones spread by an external transport such as insects ... like malaria, or by air, like flu. In the case of Ebola, the limiting factor is that most contagion happens via deliberate, intentional contact with extremely sick people who require a lot of rather unpleasant care. The US is not really a place where widespread contagion is likely to happen. This feature of the disease is one reason why fewer than 200 people worldwide, on average, per year, have died from it over its almost-40 year history.
