Debating, as an intellectual competition, is an age old culture in Msia, esp in most of the premier schools/universities. SCHOOLS: In 1974, the MOE started the Prime Ministers Cup debating tournament among the boarding schools. This ws followed by the Ministers Cup for MRSM and Piala Datuk Wira for day-schools. Today, IIUMs Inter-Sch Debate Competition is considered the most important inter-sch debate competitions bcoz it is open to all schools...VARSITY: In UM, since mid-80s, Fifth College ws actively organising English debate competitions. Since mid-80s, the Malay inter-varsity debate became active, starting wif Debat Piala MB Selangor, followed wif others, incl Debat Alam Sekitar, which is currently d oldest Malay inter-varsity debate series...In 1995: the Varsity Debate Council (MADUM) was formed, which gv birth to d most celebrated inter-varsity debate competition, ie. Royal...Today, the Malaysian Inst of Debating & Public Speaking (MIDP), which was formed by Iqbal Hafiz, (after succesfully managing and coaching, on behalf of MOE, the Msian team at the World Sch Debating Championship, where we r ranked fifth; after organising and coaching Msian teams who for three consecutive years became Asian Sch champion; & is hosting Worlds Inter-Varsity in Jan 2015), is proud to re-launch the Nationals (inter-varsity English debate), at Taylors Univ Lakeside Campus. As patron of MIDP, and as someone who was involved in most of the abovementioned debating trajectory, I am most honoured to be given the opportunity to launch the Nationals tonight.
