Debunking the Calorie Myth By: Kathi Eide It is a never ending battle for some to lose weight. So many gimmicks, fads, fat free, high carb diets to entice someone looking to lose weight. The following article by Kris Gunnars explains the calorie in/calorie out concept and how important it is to know the difference of taking in a pound of broccoli compared to a pound of sugar. Foods affect our bodies in different ways and take different metabolic pathways to best meet the needs of the eater. The foods we eat can directly affect the hormones that regulate when and how much we eat. This article has easy to understand scientific illustrations on the process fructose and protein has on the body. The myth is that people that are overweight might not be because of too many calories but due to hormones. According to Kris Gunnars “It is possible that we are confusing cause and effect. Perhaps it’s not the increased calorie intake that drives the fat gain, but the fat gain that drives the increased calorie intake.” So many variables to take into account when we look at our food intake and possibly the hormonal impact our food intake has. Different foods can have varying effects on our health. Saying that weight (or health for that matter) is simply a function of “calories in, calories out” is completely wrong. This concept is oversimplified and does not take into account the complex metabolic pathways different foods go through or the effects food has on our brains and hormones. The types of foods we base our diet around are just as important as the amount of calories we are eating.
