Dec. 16 1940- In a sudden and complete collapse the 54- year -old bridge over the Salamonie river on East Water st. road, state highway 26, at the east edge of Portland, crashed into the bed of the stream at 7am Sun. morning, carrying an automobile and its lone occupant down with the tangled wreckage of 80 feet of steel overhead beams and girders and wooden flooring.
