Dec 2 - 13 B’atz’ (Chuen) Today, 13 B’atz’, is often regarded as the absolute best day for a marriage. If you pronounce it as b’atz’ it’s a howler monkey. If you pronounce it as batz, it’s a thread. Most K’iche’ Daykeepers I have met think of it as a thread. All the same, there is a mythological link between the two. In ancient times, the monkey twins were the patrons of all the fine arts. Among the contemporary Maya, the principal art form is weaving. In terms of the weaving metaphor, the entire cosmos is said to be like a tangle of threads which must be “unbundled” in order to be woven into a harmonious universe. The world we live in is an orderly pattern, a beautifully woven blanket; but the Underworld below us, Xib’alb’a, is a tangle of chaotic threads, primal and as yet without order. The courses of the planets, of the sun and moon and stars, are a part of that majestically woven pattern. The tangled threads of the Underworld touch our own world in many places, like conduits of energy between one world and the next. These are the places of power, the sacred places alive with magic. Today is the day you can pick up the threads to weave the tapestry of your life. Disparate elements in your personal world may be woven together and re-envisioned to create a colorful new blend. Each new thread that is added to the brilliant panoply of your existence is like a new beginning.
