Dec. 8th - God is with Us: “Emmanuel” –God making his residence in man Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Fathers which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. - John 14:23-25 No matter what we are going through as a nation and as a people, God is with us. God is never absent He is always present. There is never a time or place where God is not present. If God is always present then He can never be absent. When we attended elementary school, the teacher would call the roll at the start of the class and each student would respond to let the teacher and their fellow students know that they were present. If you responded to being present the teacher would not over look you and act as if you didn’t show up for school. Because you were present, your name would be called to find your place in the reading group or other class room activities. When it was time to assemble for lunch or to go out for recess there was a space reserved for each student that was present. Sometimes in the course of our daily life we dont include God and we treat Him as if He is absent. We over look God’s presence because we can’t always see the evidence proving He is with us, but no matter what we are facing in our life God never fails to show up. The beginning of John chapter 14 captures the infamous response that Christ gave His disciples as He prepared to make his departure, telling them that their hearts will not be troubled if they truly believe in Him. The response from the disciples challenges Jesus, as they ask how they can know where He is going or know the way. They have no clue about what He is saying, they dont understand what He is saying, and they cannot have confidence that He is going to prepare a place for them. They have been with Jesus for some time but they dont recognize that Jesus is the way. He tells them that I am the way, the truth, and the life. Jesus emphasizes that He is already present, right now. No need to figure out how we are going to get to our destination because He is already here.
