December 1, 1979 - 35 Years Ago Today: The Flying Lizards debuted at No. 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with their single, Money. This was the British New Wave groups only single to chart on the Hot 100 and it didnt even crack the Top 40 only reaching No. 50 on January 19, 1980. However, the song was a hit on dance-oriented radio and in clubs and peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Disco Top 100 chart. Money was a cover of Barrett Strongs 1960 hit which peaked at No. 23. He co-wrote the song with Motown founder, Berry Gordy, Jr., and it was covered numerous times including The Beatles who had a non-Hot 100 classic recording of it in 1964, the Kingsmen had the highest peak in 1964 at No. 16, Jr. Walker & The All Stars reached No. 52 in 1966 and finally, this version by the Flying Lizards was recorded, released and began its 10-week chart run on this date in 1979.
