Being the largest planet in the solar system Jupiter was named for the most powerful Roman god, whose equivalent in the ancient Greek pantheon was Zeus, the leader of the Olympians. Many of the qualities said to be transmitted by the planet are identifiable with its divine namesake, including joviality, optimism, generosity and expansiveness and an interest in philosophical, ethical, judicial, and religious matters.
