December 12, 1972....Cernan & Schmitt begin day 2s EVA by repairing a fender that was broken off when Cernans geology hammer accidentally catches on the fender during the first EVA. The new makeshift replacement fender is constructed from duct tape & lunar terrain maps. During their EVA Schmitt finds orange soil near Shorty Crater. Previous missions had seen orange colored soil that turned out to be reflections from the gold colored foil on the Lunar Module or equipment. Schmitt quickly confirms that it is not a reflection and they both take quick samples to keep from getting behind on the mission schedule. They successfully end another EVA and retire to the Lunar Module. The orange colored soil was determined to be approximately 3.64 billion years old mostly likely from an ancient volcanic eruption, but the origin other elements found in the orange soil remains unknown.
