December 13, 2014 The Salmon river Snowmobile Club will be sponsoring their annual Toy & Food Drive at 10:00 am in the Mountain Village Restaurant parking lot. Helping Hands of Custer County receives all of the proceeds for distribution to those in need. In an article from the November 16, 2014 edition, of the Idaho Statesman, titled Food insecurity persists for some Idahoans, there is information provided, that states there is a great need for food support. In 2012, 17.8 percent of children under the age of 18 went hungry because of restricted access to food. Custer county was listed in that percentile. This is a nationwide problem, but it hits us locally, as residents of Custer County. Idahos overall insecurity rate is 15.8 percent, according to the study. Idaho has a higher food insecurity rate than most of its neighboring states, with the exceptions of Nevada (16.8 percent) and Oregon (16.7 percent). Although this is a growing problem and always will be, I challenge you to ask yourselves, what can you do to help? In smaller communities, people are more reluctant to ask for help. But by giving what you can, help will be available to those in need, when they ask for it. Every little bit helps! There will also be donation boxes at the Stanley School and Mountain Village Mercantile. For further information you can visit the Idaho Food Bank website at idahofoodbank.org
