December 16! 43 years ago on December 16 the Pakistani troops surrendered to Indian forces in Dhaka. We have since then celebrated Vijay Diwas to pay our tributes to the martyrs who laid their lives fighting for the nation. Apart from paying our tributes, December 16 is symbolic of victory over war. Exactly two years ago, on December 16, Nirbhaya was raped in a moving bus in Delhi. The nation was outraged at this gruesome act. Nirbhaya fought valiantly but finally lost her life. The perpetrators are behind bars and justice is moving at its own snails pace. Not much has unfortunately changed on the ground. Today in Peshawar, again on December 16, more than 100 school going children have been ruthlessly murdered in an act of global terrorism. The school was about to be closed in few days for the holiday season. Children of class 9 and 10 were in the auditorium preparing to take first aid lessons. And then they were taken away by the Taliban. India might have won the war on December 16 in 1971 but there are many other wars which we and the other countries need to win. Crime against women and terrorism are areas where wars need to be waged on a war footing. The strong forces of the world need to unite systemically, politically, legally and urgently to minimize the gruesome acts against the innocent.
