December 16th. The day that the genocide of 1971 ended, gaining Bangladesh liberation from the Pakistani army. My parents still dont talk about what happened in those years of their lives, but hundreds of thousands of lives were lost, and the ethnic cleansing of the Bangladeshi people Today, December 16, is the anniversary of the day the Pakistani army surrendered to Bangladeshi nationalists in Dhaka, ending the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. My parents were only children at the time, and though they were fortunate enough to escape the systematic genocide conducted by the Pakistani army, hundreds of thousands of people – including children like them – were not. Old wounds run deep, and it’s easy lto continue mourning atrocities of the past. The true tragedy of this day, though, is that atrocities against the innocent continue in the present, as they did today Peshawar. Nothing – no cause, no country, no religiond, absolutely nothing – justifies the killing of children (or anyone, if you ask me) of any gender, race, religion, or nationality. Nothing.
