December 17 - Whats In A Name? Day Mt.1:21 And she will give birth to a Son and you will name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. Jesus, or Joshua in Hebrew, was a very common name in Israel in those days, but this time the name was to have its true meaning, which Eusebius, an ancient historian tells us was: Salvation of God. Joseph was hereby being served notice that his son would be the Savior. Everything in Jesus life had spiritual significance, including His name. He saves people from their sins. Because of overuse the phrase Jesus saves has almost lost its meaning in our culture, but it is the most profound characteristic of Jesus ministry. It is central to everything He came to do. We are all sinners. If you dont believe that, look around and watch peoples behavior for just a few minutes and youll see that no one acts like God wants them to. Even if they can fake it on the outside, inside they are full of dead mens bones. You cant see into others hearts to confirm this, but you can look into your own heart, and, at least there, you will see a need for a Savior. Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. If you can draw the conclusion that you fit that description, congratulations, you are a candidate for salvation! Today is Whats In A Name? Day. It is a day to think deeply about what Jesus name means to you.
