Frank Sinatra could be mentioned in a great many groups from the 1940s on. He started out in the Swing era, in the 40s, quickly becoming a teen idol, or Bobbysoxers as they were then called. His career slowed down in the early 50s but got a boost when he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a film, From Here to Eternity , in 1953. Through the 50s he had a string of acclaimed albums, and in 1961, founded his own record label, Reprise Records. Sinatra had success touring and during this time founded the famous or infamous, depending on your viewpoint, Rat Pack . The Rat Pack consisted of Sinatra The Chairman of the Board , and pals, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Sammy Davis Jr., and Joey Bishop. They hung out, performed in stages, films, making several Rat Pack movies such as the famous Oceans 11 , Sergeants 3 and Robin and the 7 Hoods . They had many friends and people who fraternized with them from time to time, including Sen. John F. Kennedy. Meanwhile, he scored hits even though he was now in his 50s. His hits during this time included Strangers if the Night , and My Way , and Thats Life , as well as a hit duet with his daughter, Nancy Sinatra, Somethin Stupid . His career slowed down and he retired for the first time in 1971, but like the lyric in Thats Life says, he just picked himself up and got back in the race, and in 1973 began recording albums again and during this time had a Top 40 hit with the theme from New York, New York . He performed shows in Las Vegas, and toured within the U.S. and internationally until not long before his death in 1998.
