December 1st is World AIDS Day, and did you know that the River Campus Libraries is home to one of the worlds largest collections of AIDS awareness posters? Before the days of the Internet, and when fear and stigma and discrimination were at their peak during the AIDS epidemic, printed posters and phone hotlines were often the only way patients or at-risk people could reach out for help or information. At more than 8,000 posters, this collection continues to grow and is already helping researchers and students understand how health communications can work in a crisis and how visual cultures differ from society to society and over time.
