December 21: We bring out the big guns... Sir James He came to - TopicsExpress

December 21: We bring out the big guns... Sir James He came to us as James but I felt he needed a title so quickly became known as Sir James, nowadays we settle for Jimbo. Jimbo came to us over three years ago as our junior stock bull. Our main requirements for our bull was he had to be handsome and correct - tick, gentle - tick, excellent on the halter - tick and randy - gold star ;0) Getting to know Jimbo over the years has been great, he has such a character and only a handful of times have I really seen him let himself go, mainly when we bring new girls into his field ;0) We have had great pleasure showing Jimbo throughout the last 2 years, he brings a whole different level of respect in the show ring, he is large, majestic and stunning. He has held his own in the native breed classes winning a few firsts and Native Reserve Champion. He loves a good shampoo (no I am not joking), wash and groom which shows him off at his best, he has a very fine coat on his body so we cannot hide anything from the judge, but at the same time shows his flesh and muscle off at its best, as I always say, never under estimate the power of a good wash ;0) Jimbo is the perfect gentle giant, but can have his off days, he does that head flicking thing that is common to most Highland Bulls which keeps us on our toes. I have to be honest I am always on edge when we take him out, mainly due to his size and power, but as my Husband pointed out to me, he is probably more steady than some of our girls. It is so nice to have a bull that we can show off to everybody else, it really does make you proud when you take him in the Grand Parade and hear peoples comments. One afternoon we were doing a bit of halter training before Rutland Show when Jimbo stopped walking on, so Dad gave a gentle tug on his nose ring and it snapped off! We jumped in the car, drove to buy a new one (as you do!), got back to the field and haltered him up again. I said right lets put him in the crush, Dad and Darren looked at each other and said no we are going freestyle Jimbo moved his head a bit but didnt seem to mind, Darren threaded the nose ring back in freestyle (see last photo) and all was well for Rutland Show (you are not allowed to show a bull without a ring in). This to me proves that he is a gentle giant, if he didnt want us to do it we would not have stood a chance. Secretly I think the boys love taking Jimbo out, dont get me wrong they love the girls too but a bull takes showing to a whole new level, It think the words male bonding spring to mind ;0) We were apprehensive about keeping a bull as you hear such horror stories about them breaking out and destroying all the fencing, but we can honestly say it has been nothing but a pleasure keeping our bull and we love him running with our girls. A sad day will come sooner rather than later, as we will not be able to keep Jimbo for much longer as we cannot let him breed with his heifer calves. There will not be a dry eye in the place when it is time for him to find a new home as he has brought so much joy to our lives. He is going to be an extremely tough act to follow. Jimbo we are beyond proud of you, thank you for completing our fold so perfectly, you Sir are the boss xx
