December 23, 2014 Moment of Grace 4th Advent Tuesday – LOVE When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” John 21:15-17 This morning is my brother James’ birthday. I was thinking of the Christmas James made his entrance into our home. Bagley St. CGMA Church had just blessed the community of believers with their Christmas program the Sunday before- “Detroit Louie,” which I had the largest role to memorize. The World was different then. Police officers and clergy were highly respected and never regarded with suspicion. Our President was a WW II hero and was thought to be so trustworthy! To my 10 year old mind, all was well. Cards from my Aunt Lucy and Grandmother held $5.00! There were gifts under the tree with my name on them! James Came home Christmas Day, as I recall. My Aunt Bessie had been my brother Ben (who was still a baby- not quite 2 years old) and my care giver while dad was at the hospital with mom! What a Christmas gift… a baby… So much about the wonder of Christmas is wrapped up in the fact that God became a baby! Was it so Jesus could say, I know what you are going through as a child? Could it be the foundation for Jesus’ teaching, “Except you become like a child, you cannot enter the Kingdom of God?” How vulnerable a child’s life is! So dependent on parents to feed, care and protect them… I was a part of that care. I carried the diaper-bag for mom and helped her load it up for each trip to church- 2-3 bottles of formula, bottle of juice, (boy could they eat!) and of course the essentials. I remember the look in the eyes of mom and dad as they held the baby. Have you ever noticed the look of a mother or father holding their baby? That little one would keep them awake some nights inconsolable for seeming no reason! Yet, the love for the baby was always there! Our Father God sees you and sees me that way… Oh how he loves us! Not only did God give the greatest gift- His Son, but He considers you a great gift to Himself. Notice, Jesus never asked Peter, “Peter do I love you?” That was a given! God loves us! PRAYER: Father God, I love that song that speaks of Your love for me. “Jesus loves me this I know…” My heart is filled with wonder at the thought of You being a little baby… born to human mother and reared by a human father. Emanuel, God became man… Lord, thank You for allowing Yourself to know what it is like to be a son of Adam. Thank You for this wonderful day! Bless my family, I pray in Jesus’ Name, Amen!
