December 23, 2014 The Israeli authorities Tuesday demolished a metal workshop in Dahiyat al-Yasmin, on the outskirts of Ramallah, said the workshop’s owner. Mahdi al-Khateeb said an Israeli army force accompanied by heavy machinery broke into the area at around 4AM (Jerusalem time) and proceeded to demolish the workshop. Prior to the demolition, Khateeb had been notified to appear before the Israeli Civil Administration in the adjacent illegal settlement of Beit El, yet army forces arrived in the neighborhood and demolished the workshop before the deadline. The workshop, believed to be the only source of livelihood for as many as 10 Palestinian families, has an estimated asset of no less than $64,000. Israel rarely issues construction permits for Palestinians living in Area C, under Israeli civil and military control, prompting many Palestinians to construct without obtaining the necessary permit. From 2006 through May 2014, Israel demolished at least 752 Palestinian residential units in the West Bank (East Jerusalem excluded), causing 3,568 people, including at least 1,712 minors, to lose their homes, according to the Israeli human rights group, B’Tselem. The Israeli authorities repeatedly demolish homes in the Jordan Valley and South Hebron Hills communities that are unrecognized by the Israeli government. Since May 2014, in the Jordan Valley and the South Hebron Hills, B’Tselem reported the demolition of the homes of at least 450 Palestinians – including 229 minors.
