December 6th, 2014 – NATIONAL PAWNBROKERS DAY – Each year on December 6, people all across the United States acknowledge National Pawnbrokers Day. This holiday was created as a day to pay tribute to a profession that provides a valuable service to those in need of cash funds and also those looking for a reasonably good deal. The word pawn is derived from the Latin word pignus, for pledge. The history of pawnbroking begins thousands of years ago in the west in Ancient Greek and Roman Empires and in the East over 3000 years ago in China. The profession of pawnbroker stretches back thousands of years and took place in the Greek and Roman Empires and in ancient China. It even has its own patron saint, St Nicholas, and Pawnbrokers Day is held on that saint’s day every year. The day aims to recognize the role played by pawnbrokers in communities around the world in helping people manage their money. They do this by providing loans that are secured on a pledged item which is returned when the loan is repaid. The traditional sign of a pawnbrokers shop in the West is three golden balls hanging from a bar, while in Japan it is a number seven with a circle round it and in China, a coin held by a bat. Some of the most common items that are pawned are musical instruments, and many pawnbrokers donate musical instruments to schools and other organisations who need them on Pawnbrokers Day. Five years ago, the National Pawnbrokers Association began a wonderful program on National Pawnbrokers Day called Musical Instrument Gift Day. Pawnbrokers across the country make generous donations of musical instruments to organizations in need. December 6, 2012, they worked with The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation and collected instruments for a high school in Mississippi.
