December 7 - “Children, Go Where I Send Thee” is a traditional African-American spiritual. Just like other songs that have relied on the oral tradition and have been passed from generation to generation, many versions of this song exist. All of them consist of verses that are cumulative, adding numbers up to 12 and relating each number to a Bible story. The version that Russell Mauldin and I wrote for the Ready-To-Sing musical Bethlehem Morning focuses more on the events and emotions surrounding the Christmas story, but we hoped that, just like the original, this adaptation would be fun for choirs to sing. Every version of this song reminds me that each tradition we keep is “all for the little bitty baby born in Bethlehem!”
