December 8, 1980 The Dakota Central Park West New York, New York The Dream Is Over . . . Thirty-four years ago tonight, while most of America was watching the Miami Dolphins play the New England Patriots on ABCs NFL Monday Night Football, we learned of the tragic death of former Beatle John Lennon at the hands of an assassin while Lennon was returning home to his apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. After five years of a self-imposed retirement from the music industry, the fall of 1980 had marked the dynamic return of Lennon to the recording studio with the release of Double Fantasy - the album he had recorded with his wife Yoko Ono which was rapidly climbing the charts with hit singles such as Starting Over and Woman. For many Beatles fans, Lennons death extinguished any hopes of a long-awaited Beatles reunion, and forever silenced the voice of one of the most influential spokesman of the post-World War II Baby Boomer generation. Here is Lennon singing the haunting God from his first post-Beatle solo album, Plastic Ono Band, released on the heels of the Beatles breakup in 1970. The images Lennon alludes to in God paint a picture of a man desperately looking to find the essence of his spirituality and, in the process, dispel any notion that his ultimate legacy would be tied to the Beatles or other iconic figures. Ironically, though written 10 years before his death, the tag line of God - The Dream Is Over - was the overwhelming sentiment felt around the world that night . . .
