He was born near Avila, Spain. He was a Carmelite and a priest. John was a theological student, spiritual director and he devoted himself to a search for God. He was a mystic, a writer and a poet. It was from one of his writings that we get the phrase, ‘Dark night of the soul’ SERVICE LEADERS IN DECEMBER 1 – 9:00 – Handbell Choir 1 – HE – 9:30 am – the Rev. My goal is to visit with each of you in the near future, but if there is a need before that happens please give me a call and we can arrange a time to meet [283- 1259]. The vestry’s purpose in this is to identify needs and gifts and to just let all of you know that Good Shepherd cares for and about you. Blessings, the Rev. Cliff You will note that on the 8th and the 15th, that Holy Eucharist and Morning Prayer are switched. Several of our members will be gone that day. heavenly Father, you have blessed us with the joy and care of children: Give us calm strength and patient wisdom as we bring them up, that we may teach them to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. -- BCP, pg. 829 The Rev. Sally Boyd joins us on Thursday, the 5th, at 5:30 for our first Advent Soup Supper. We are all asked to bring a seasonal Poem to share after our meal and before our closing worship. Come early on December 1st to hear the Sundance Handbell Choir – 9:00 – before Holy Eucharist Collect for John of the Cross: Judge eternal, throned in splendor, you gave John of the Cross strength of purpose and mystical faith that sustained him even through the dark night of the soul: Shed your light on all who love you, in unity with Jesus Christ our Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. How children perceive their Grandparents: A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. “We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods.” The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!” “Heavenly Father, help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children. Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can’t make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester. Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day [who really ought to get a job!] is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together. Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not to just those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love.” “We feel comfortable with where we are in the world when we are comfortable with who we are.” --quoted in Guideposts = === == == === = === = “ Jesus, your birth is wonderful and your mother is the most beloved woman of all time. Help all of us who believe in you to honour each other equally, whatever our gender, whatever our ability, whatever our social state may be.” --Amen --A New Zealand Prayer Book, page 660 ************************* LEADERS OF GOOD SHEPHERD BISHOP – The Rt.
