• Decentralization of decision-making and a system of checks and balances as a means of dampening brute power are good. But they only work on a publicly accessible government, one where all the people are enfranchised. • But political power is always present. If unused by one authority, it gets quickly seized by another. When the Roman Empire declined, warlords and their “gvasi” (vassals) were quick to seize control. Inept governments today struggle with gangs, mafias, kingpins, and drug lords. • “…We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,” • “…to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men…” The concept to grasp here is that governments, governments “deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed” are the guarantors of liberty. • Whether that government imposes a “voting rights act” to force racists to share political power with the oppressed; or to intervene when crime lords conspire to control cities; or to force meat processors to not sell contaminated meat to a powerless public; or to break up a drug cartel; or to force coal barons in small mining towns to let their workers organize to negotiate as equals for fair wages; or in any of the thousands of situations where individuals grasp power for personal gain that will deprive citizens of their rights to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” • We are in a political struggle today with oligarchs who would deprive hard working men and women of the share of the wealth that they create through manipulation of legislatures and control of the public media. They succeed through our ignorance and lack of understanding. They convince us that the guarantor of our individual liberties is our greatest enemy. That by diminishing the power of the government of the people, that somehow other powers subject to their personal wants will not fill the vacuum. • The struggle is still with us.
