Decided at breakfast this morning to stay on another night in Squaw Valley after yesterday afternoon’s thunderstorms. Then, on putting my nose out the door into the usually fresh mountain air, I smelled a smell I didn’t like, and breathing was heavy. A very quick pack and I got the hell out of Dodge again, and down the hill to Sacramento and home. These photos are from yesterday afternoon and evening, and are the strangest sky I’ve seen in a long time. That yellow colour is not from the sun’s reflections, but cloud discolouration coming from all the forest fires in the Sierras. There was the concern that I-80 might be closed, so no time to lose. Just heard that the air is now at dangerous levels in the Lake Tahoe area, so if anyone’s thinking of going up there this weekend, I’d forget it. Three hours, and 182 miles later, I was sitting out on the deck in warm sunshine, blues skies and clear air, partaking of a cup of Rosy Lea (Cockney rhyming slang for tea).
