Decided to take most of the day off since I never stopped being busy throughout the three-day weekend. Spent ages replaying Resident Evil 2 for the first time since... shit, I guess the late 90s. Still absolutely holds up. I used to swallow the belief that survival horror was dated and had to evolve itself out of existence (I even wrote about it many years ago), but on reflection, theres actually no reason why we cant have those games today. The controls and even the fixed camera have an underappreciated timelessness that, replaying today, seem to work better than I remember. I miss survival horror. The more I think about it, the more I realize there was no *actual* reason it went away. Its decline was engineered by the industry - and given the remaining popularity of classic survival horror (hell, Resi sells well enough for Capcom to keep re-releasing it!), it seems there was never a reason to kill them off to begin with.
