Decisions made by the Trustee Board: 1) To abolish all - TopicsExpress

Decisions made by the Trustee Board: 1) To abolish all non-sabbatical (or part-time) officers. This includes: the Ethnic Minority Students’ Officer, Disabled Students’ Officer, Women’s Officer, LGBTQ Officer, Home Students’ Officer, Mature and Part-Time Students’ Officer, International Students’ Officer, Satellite Sites’ Officer, Ethical and Environmental Officer, Anti-Racism and Anti-Fascism Officer, and the Community Action Officer. These officers are campaigning officers who do immeasurable good for the least privileged students, and Council voted to keep them. 2) To not include liberation officers as full-time officers, despite Council voting that they should be. However, they decided to keep the amendment that makes the post-graduate officer a full-time officer. There appears to be contradicting principles at play here. 3) To overturn the ability of associations to send representative speakers to Assemblies, who would have prioritised speaking rights and ensure that the voices of minorities were heard amidst. 4) To prevent students giving steers to officers and allowing for time-sensitive change to be pursued. 5) To decrease the amount of Officer Accountability Forums. 6) To disallow questions and scrutiny in Assemblies. 7) To prevent students proposing amendments to motions and as such halt any possibility of compromise between students. 8) To reject the amendment that changes the composition of the Assessment group to something more democratic All of these decisions explicitly go against the will of democratically elected students in Guild Council, who spent 10 hours discussing these amendments. Bear in mind, also, that the Trustee Board are only meant to overturn decisions made by Guild Council for “financial, legal, or Guild repetition issues” (Guild Bye-Laws, 2014: page 15).
