Declared assets to go public March 2 The Directorate of Public - TopicsExpress

Declared assets to go public March 2 The Directorate of Public Officer’s Assets Declarations says it will start allowing the public to access details showing the wealth of selected senior public officers, including the President and the Vice-President on March 2, this year. The other senior officials whose worth will be accessible during the first phase are the Speaker and deputy Speakers of the National Assembly, Cabinet ministers, members of Parliament, leaders and treasurers of political parties represented in Parliament, mayors and councillors. Confirming this to Weekend Nation on Thursday, Director of Public Officers’ Assets Declarations, Chris Tukula, explained that his office decided to perform the exercise in phases and in categories based on seniority and risk. “The first reason we are starting with the senior officers is because that is where demand for scrutiny is the heaviest,” he said. “The second reason is that we have a voluminous task which the skeleton staff available at the moment cannot make ready in the shortest time possible.” The office—expected to receive and scrutinise declarations from the public officers who include the President, the Vice-President, 18 Cabinet ministers, 193 members of Parliament, 96 principal secretaries, heads and directors of all parastatals; government agencies and oversight and accountability institutions—only has nine members of staff, including the director himself. --More in the WEEKEND NATION
